Celebrity obsession part 2

ooh, ooh, I hate Brangelina! :)

As I mentioned in an earlier thread (by Alternadad?) about Tim Russert I normally don't get wrapped around the axis about the doings of celebrities.

Having said that, I have been unusually interested in the knee of a wealthy, sexy golfer lately. Besides the fact that he is the second cutest golfer I know (hi, PF!) I think he actually works as a role model in a way that the vast majority of celebrities don't. Hard working, pleasant and patient with fans, truly seems to love life.

Can you think of other celebrities that cross that line for you?

ruth - be careful, they are working hard to take over the world through population domination.

JM, I know! They scare me.

I can't think of a celebrity off the top of my head but I know what you mean about TW. I loved how, after he won, they brought his daughter and he held her and kissed her, and then he went to give her back to mom and she cried and reached back for him to take her again. It was just cute, seeing her want her daddy.

This goes back a way, so may not count, since it's not a current celeb, but is one of my favorite stories and an example of how celebs SHOULD be:

A reporter once asked Joe DiMaggio why he played so hard; ran out every grounder and raced every fly, even in the dog days of August when the Yankees had such a big lead in the pennant race that there was nothing on the line. DiMaggio replied, "I always remind myself that there might be someone in the stands who never saw me play before."

JTC, I was totally unprepared for the truly revolting image. I could probably vomit right now with the least provocation.

Ain't she a peach? Amy is my hero.

This might be juvenile, but I really like Amanda Bynes. So really, if she's done anything awful, don't tell me about it. I'm pretty much oblivious when it comes to celebrities and pop culture in general. Then again, sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

There are people I really enjoy watching perform in movies and tv. Even though I do read entertainment sites on the web, I wouldn't want to meet any celebrties in real life, I don't think (who are already famous). They meet a lot of people and feel important and like you're lucky to meet them, and in all probability will completely forget you. What would be the point of that encounter?

On the other hand, I had a great time hanging out with Salmon Rushdie for the day. I worked a book signing and organized and handed him all the books to sign. He gossiped about other authors and was pretty cool. But I didn't go out of my way to meet him, had work things to talk to him about, etc.

mcglory13, Salman? (GX spelled his name the same way a day or two ago, and I kept picturing him on a cedar plank with a honey-lime glaze.)

I think it's better sometimes to keep the mystery. I heard John Cusack interviewed on the radio once and he was such a jerk to the interviewer. I'm sure it's a pain in the butt to wake up early to call a bunch of radio stations, but still, he could've been more civil.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. My spelling on offsprung lately continues to degenerate. In my defense, his affect is a bit cold fishy. Thanks for watching out for me JTC. :)

We all have "asshole" moments. Sucks when you are constantly being watched and each asshole moment is catalogued by the public. Still, that being said, I don't think I will ever think Alec's rant to his daughter was justified or okay.

I have a weird pull to Brangelina. Not sure if it is celebrity obsession or just mild horror.

Donnakat...Anyone who came of age in the 80s loves Cusack. But as it turns out, he's a royal prick. Which sucks to hear.

Ylime...I don't think it's really fair for any of us to judge Alec's rant. We don't know the whole story or what goes on behind closed doors. And really, what parent hasn't lost it on their kid before? What wasn't right is that it was leaked to the press and everybody in America heard it.

The really interesting thing about living in LA is that sometimes you actually have contact with your celeb crushes. I have a major Reese Witherspoon thing (I have forever!) and was THIS CLOSE to meeting her at a party.

Met Will Shanter at a Mexican indoor/outdoor restaurant. We asked the people at this table for an extra chair and it turned out my grandmother was asking WS. He came over and sat with us (I think he was at a lunch meeting that was boring) til our food came.

He also flirted with my grandmother mercilessly. She was in her late 50's at the time and is still quite the looker. Needless to say it freaked my 12 year old self out.

This has me thinking about how I just finished the series finale for the BBC show "Extras." Anyone ever saw that? The descent of that guy into being a total prick was so hard to watch.

DGB, for the most part, I agree with you. I don't think any one of us hasn't freaked out on our kids before. But something about the Alec rant really hits me in a bad place. I think it was verbal abuse. And while I completely understand anger/frustration and losing it...I sincerely hope he healed this situation with his daughter when we weren't listening in. That phone call is the perfect example of saying something you don't mean that your child holds on to for their entire lives. I remember times my mother lost it and said horrible things to me, and they are times that still affect our interactions.

I sincerely hope that I never say things like that to my children. I haven't yet, but they are LITTLE. Who knows what will happen in our relationships.

I sat next to Julie Andrews for 5 hours on a transatlantic flight many years ago, and we talked quite a bit. I found her to be charming, and very down to earth. She mostly asked me questions about my life etc.

She's had a long career, I dont think I've ever heard an unkind word toward her.

Capt...that's awesome. What a great meet.

I don't want to know bad things about John Cusack. Also, Kevin Spacey is NOT gay, as he is to be my husband as soon as I can arrange to meet him. :)

Capt, meeting Julie Andrews would be amazing. I've never met anyone famous. I saw Vincent D'Onofrio walking around in NYC once. That's about it.

My closest brush with fame was working for Justin Timberlake's stepfather. He would regale us with Justin and Britney stories (this was back when they were dating) and while he was a super-nice guy, he really lived on another planet. One where people didn't live paycheck to paycheck and could afford to hire decorators.

Capt - I'm jealous. Julie Andrews has always seemed very gracious and charming.

Oh my closest famous person is embarrassing... in high school I was acquaintances/friendly with the now lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls. She was a very sweet and not at all... skanky girl who was very, very talented.

As geek-y as I get about movies and who is making what movie, I could really care less what they do off-screen/set. I could care less about their private lives or kids. I find the obsession with celebrity kids to be very un-nerving.

That said I love me some Ashley Judd. I would be a mumbling fool in her company! ;)

S-P, sad to say, Ashley Judd is an uber bitch. She totally screwed my dad over, personally, costing his clients tens of thousands of dollars.

McG... lalala I can't hear you... lalala... ;)

It's not the first time that I've heard that she's a bieyotch though. Sorry to hear about what she did to your dad.
