Back when he talked about making sure that your favourite delicacies don't become your kids?

This morning, my six year old wanted bread, water, and cheese for breakfast. What the hell, it hit at least two food groups, right? I'm getting ready to cut her some cubes of marble cheese and she pipes up "no no, I want the white kind you were eating yesterday."

"Brie? You want my BRIE?"

"Yeah!"

"It's a very... soft cheese. You might not like it."

"I'll like it."

"Would you like a lobster tail to go with that?"

"Can I have butter to dip it in? Melted butter?"

s-c-r-e-w-e-d!

Yep, screwed.

Yep, little P has a thing Indian food. For 2 people it's at least $30 takeout, or $40 something in house.

Maybe you can make 'em do chores? "Will work for fancy food."

Leighbie, you can make it at home for way cheaper than that. Plus, it's super easy. If you feel like cooking, I can post you some recipes.

So far I've been spared that particular fate, but I know it's coming.

O loves sushi now, or at least any "roll" that doesn't have fish in it. She ate an entire order of California Rolls once.

Wookie, you march out right now and get her some Blue Cheese, and tell her THAT'S Brie.

Sushi? Brie? Indian food? What is this? Some kind of Obama Island? ;)

1st kid loves to drink my Perrier. When he was 2 I gave him a taste thinking he'd hate it but NO he loves it. He'll ask for it in the store before he asks for soda. He also LOVES seafood and just last weeks asked if he could have crab legs for dinner.

JTC, my kids won't eat the Indian food. Kind of a shame, because I make some variety of curry at least 3-4 days a week and it is good stuff, but they say they don't like spice. So it's plain rice with a scrambled egg and/or plain veggies for them on those days.

It makes Mr. S sad that his boys are picky, but I figure they'll eat it when they get a bit older.

Shrimp. My kids can't get enough shrimp. And they like jumbo shrimp. I can't pass off mealy salad shrimp as a meal. And, they want lots. Not just one or two. They wants plates and plates of scampi, and their own shrimp cocktails, etc.

LMAO HBD, that's some evil thinking going on.

My baby keeps wanting the cat biscuits, i've toyed with the idea of filling the cat's bowl with wasabi peas or chilli nuts just so she will stop making a bee-line for it. :( knowing my luck she'd like it, but the cat would throw up on the loungeroom floor.

I'll never forget the day my mother gave me an oyster after hours (seemed like) of insisting i wouldn't like it. I immediately insisted i DID like it, and ate another 3. I don't think she ordered oysters again for another 15 years, at least, not in front of me.

Yeah, this is us. For awhile his favorite food was roasted beet and goat cheese salad (a la Wolfgang Puck). But he likes goat cheese in general. He's not a picky eater, which is great, but also surprises us when he eats medium hot salsa, which is too hot for the majority of our KY relatives. Guess he is a Texan.

KS - yes! send me recipes! - we like butter chicken and korma dishes but let us know what you have. It always looks so much work.

both kids beg for sushi, sashimi (dolphin food!) and edamame.

they will not be cheap dates.

Most of the stuff I know how to make is south Indian and Sri Lankan, so it tends to be pretty spicy, but it is all really easy. I posted a few in the recipe central a while back.

I also have pages and pages of handwritten recipes that belong to the mother in law (she and I have issues, but the woman can cook) that I typed up for her years ago. I'll see if I still have the file and I'll post some of those as well if I do.

KS do you have a recipe for naan?

I have a recipe for a naan-ish kind of bread, but it isn't quite the same.

I tend to go more for the unleavened flatbreads when I make it at home and just buy the naan frozen (Deep is a good brand for that--their garlic naan is quite good).

BTW, Where's Capt been lately?

I didn't know you could buy frozen naan. I'll have to look for some.

Capt might be hip deep in the new job - although he seemed a little frustrated with the Obama/general liberal leaning of OS lately. I hope he'll be back.

"BTW, Where's Capt been lately?"

Y, my guess is that his tugboat left "Obama Island" shortly after the thread in which Sadie asked whether McCain might be too old to be president.

Ylime, I was just about to ask the same question, but I figued the answer was similar to JTC's.

Kiwi - You're in TX, right? Here's a site that lists Indian grocery stores: http://www.thokalath.com/texas/grocery_stores.php. You can get Indian ingredients for far less money than you would at a typical grocery store.

If it wasn't for frozen naan, we'd never get to eat it at home.

E loves Indian food too, and lately she's been asking for lemon in every cup of water I get for her.

My kids love all seafood, especially sushi. Girl6 asks, "do you use *real* crab or imitation crab? I want the real one please. It's ok if it costs more."

Yeah, because she's not paying.

Yeah, we just get it at the Indian grocery. You can sometimes find it at Kroger, in the ethnic food section, but it costs roughly twice as much.

Also, I saw pappadam at Kroger a while back--stacked in a container like Pringles. I haven't tried it, but that just cracked me up.

Wow, sucky that Capt might be gone. I've seen lots of threads that get people riled around here, but never noticed anyone leaving because of them. I appreciated his insights. Strange that one thread might've run him off.

(Now, back to the topic at hand.)

I'm pretty sure Capt took his toys and went home. Which does suck. What also sucks is I've kind of felt restricted in what topics I should post since I love to talk about politics.

I'm quite sure Capt took his toys and went home, too. Ylime, I think it was about the time you were busy giving birth. And ruth, don't let anybody sensor you and your political thoughts! Especially if that is exactly what they were trying to do. One of the brilliant things about this place is that everyone from me to Cog has the right to say what we think and if what anybody says bothers anybody else, you can respond with a reason why or choose to ignore that thread.

Please do post political things Ruth. While I may not agree with a heap o' you all, I don't mind hearing your perspective or arguing with you. People around here manage to do it with no name calling and very few personal attacks and that's a rare commodity in the internet world.

I don't think it was the one thread. I think it was the general liberal tone and the way people responded to what they perceived as an authoritarian lecture on how to "fix" the liberalness.

i only read every fifth or so political thread, and even then it's only if i have a clue what you're talking about. I totally missed Capt getting riled.

lucky these things crossover, and i can be in a thread about food and find out what happened at a political debate, otherwise i would be so in the dark on so many things.

i know i've offended people, and disagreed with them here, now and then. I occasionally wander away from the computer and sulk for half an hour, but it never lasts long. and usually nobody notices anyway, thank god.

either that or you're all too well-mannered to mention it.

Wow. Go on one vacation and then slog through the pile up at work and people leave. I feel so abandoned. I did not even get to participate.

Bol, I have never noticed you in a snit! I was fairly baffled by the strong reaction Capt had to the McCain thread (I think there was another one right before it too that annoyed him) but I agree, it just makes sense to skip the posts you're not interested in. Like the recipes in my case, since I hate to cook and my kids will barely eat boxed macaroni and cheese let alone Indian food!

I've always found everyone on here to be so tolerant of different viewpoints and respectful in presenting their opinions.

Good lord. I just hunted down and reread that thread (I gave up about 20 posts in last time, didn't have anything intelligent to say about it, and so I never saw the ending). That got a touch ugly there, at least by Offsprung standards. Yeah, I think he probably left.

And for the record, I don't want people to stop posting politics. Generally I find it interesting and if I don't feel like dealing with it on a particular day, then I don't read that thread. Everybody pisses off someone sometimes, the key is to act like an adult about it. One of the things I like about this place is that we all do (act like adults about it), for the most part.

ruth, it hasn't happened for ages, it only happened once or twice, the one i remember most was entirely my fault anyway - or a lack of clarity or some small misunderstanding. also i try hard not to post when cross, it doesn't help any.

funny thing really, joe mama gave me my first slap on the wrists, and a day or two later added me as a friend. this place is nice like that :) i guess it comes from being loving parents, most people here know how to dish the discipline while still being supportive.

Yikes - BoL, I hope I wasn't a total bitch! I can be amazingly snarky, but I try to take it out on the kids and dog before I come on line!

all good, i'm pretty sure i deserved it. :)
