Pet Medicine

So we've decided to keep kitten-who-shall-not-be-named (at least not yet). We're going to play it safe and get some flea and tick preventative stuff.

I looked on 1800petmeds.com and there are a lot of choices. My old vet in Illinois really tried to talk me out of using 1800petmeds but it's like Walmart telling me to buy Secret Deodorant from them because Kmart is unreliable.

Anyone have issues with 1800petmeds or have any suggestions on which brand to go with?

I've heard horrible things about Hartz brand kitty stuff so we wont be going that route but any other brands I should look out for?

1800PetMeds sells you medicine from foreign countries (I think Australia?), which are not subject to the same drug testing restrictions of America and so they're cheaper. This is why vets recommend you don't do it. I'm crazy protective about my pets so I wouldn't risk it, but obviously lots of people use the drugs with no problems.

I've never done it. Completely off subject though we just took our two dogs and new kitten to the vet and turns out ONE of the beasts [the Bernese] has Giardia and we ended up spending like, $600 so I want to die a little....or a lot.

Both Advantage & Frontline are great. Most vet offices and some pet stores will sell single doses, so give each a try and see what works for you. And comparison shop -- we find the price for a single dose varies widely from place to place.

We use Revolution. It stops everything: fleas, ticks, mosquitos, heartworm, poltergeists, whatever you've got.

Thanks, I think we're going to buy one dose and get rid of the fleas. Do you think they'll come back after that?
Kitten is going to be an indoor cat do indoor cats need continual coverage like indoor/outdoor cats do?

Indoor kitties only need continuous coverage if there are other outdoor/indoor pets in your house. So our kitty gets it full time because of the dogs.

Fleas shouldn't come back after the one dose unless they're everywhere in your house.

He/She is going to be a one and only for awhile. Thanks all. I've only noticed a couple fleas so one dose should knock em out.

MttM...we're going through this kitten/flea thing right now. A lot of the flea washes and stuff are for kittens 12 weeks and older. Frontline makes a formula for kittens (that's the one application a month thing). Those work pretty well. They sell this stuff in vets, but also in Petco and stores like that these days.

Vets have a medicine called Capstar that starts to kill fleas in 30 min. and renders all of them dead in 24 hours.

Either way, I've used Frontline and Advantage and both work well.

a bath in Avon Skin so Soft and water. seriously. it works WONDERS on fleas and is totally harmless to small animals. i have used it many times myself on every kitten i have ever had.

also, i don't know about 1800petmeds, but i do use petsheds.com which is out of Australia. i have had no problems with them and they are cheaper than 1800petmeds. my neighbor uses them too for her 4 dogs and 3 cats. no problems there either.

but seriously, try the skin-so-soft. it is cheap, available from any local avon lady and will also repel mosquitoes. (it will also repel mosquitoes on humans too!!)
