In the spirit of consumerism, I ask, what product has been discontinued that you miss the most?

I ask this specifically because we just discovered today that our favorite faux chicken (in fact, the only kind we can stomach) is no longer being made. No more fake fried chicken for us. So long Veat. We loved you so.

The Body Shop's Of A Woman scent.

I also am saddened that Mother's Cookies is out of business. I'll miss the iced oatmeal cookies.

Lawn darts. A set of lawn darts and five pet turtles--what a combination!

Alan says: Stretch Armstrong! And soccer nets with big holes--any of the Darwin toys!

The Body Shop's beer apricot shampoo.

I can't think of one at the moment, but dr.mcglory, have you ever tried these?

http://www.seeveggiesdifferently.com/product_detail.aspx?family=366&id=4971

Morningstar farms chik'n strips in their "meal starters" line. I never tried frying but they are seriously delicious in stir fries. My BF and mother, both of whom are committed carnivores, love them. The steak strips are awesome too.

"Skona" ice cream. They were all fruit-based with toasty bits in, so they were like peach, apricot, tropical, etc... just gorgeous. best. ice-cream. ever.

corn tortillas, we can only buy white flour ones now. :(

the turkey-bacon foccacia at Gloria Jean's was to die for. Now they have this 'orrible thick white bread things with lame chicken, faux avocado and v. plain cheese. Not a patch on their predecessor.

Styp Wool. It's a kind of cotton wool (well, was), that would staunch blood flow immediately. Like a styptic pencil, but could cover a much larger area, and far easier to apply "in the field." (Doesn't require water etc). I miss that stuff so freaking much. Best med kit product EVER and they freaking stopped making it.

There's probably a million others, but they're the ones i can remember right now. I also miss being able to water my garden. That's a finable offence these days. :(

Baby Magic wipes. They were silky-soft, smelled great, and came in a neat package that looked like a Lego and was virtually indestructible. I kept buying them to have more containers for storing little doodads in, which would then stack in neat columns.

Garnier Fructis Curl & Shine Leave In Conditioning Cream. It was the only thing that would tame my curls without weighing down my hair or making it look darker and crusty. Sunsilk is a runner-up, but it does make my hair look darker.

Body Shop made a citrus basil scented body wash. I stocked up on it, then they stopped making it. This past summer I came across a box in storage that had two more tubes of it, and I actually shrieked with joy. I love citrus mixed with herb scents.

Bol - I can mail you some. They don't need to be refrigerated, and assuming they didn't get beat all to hell on their trip to Oz, they'd be just fine. Email me your address. White or yellow corn?

Sorry, I was talking about tortillas, not the other stuff.

HBD - Those wipes containers were awesome.

Even though none of my kids took a binky, there used to be these binkies that were shaped just like a butterfly so when the baby sucked on them, it looked like a very cute silence of the lambs poster. Aw.

I'm going to parent hell for this, but I miss pot. Alas, pot. Our relationship ended too soon.

Ellie- on an up note, they still make pot! anytime you want to come back, it's still there.

Andromeda - Hee. That is true. At least there's my good friend, alcohol, to console me.

Andromeda, hee hee! I was thinking that too. Ellie, it's not like it's gone forever.

We have tried the Morningstar Farms Chick'n strips, Ruth. And our considered opinion is: yuck. Veat was much, much, yummier. I appreciate your attempts, but there is no assuaging my grief.

Also, the last time I tried pot my stomach hurt really really bad.

Pot might still be "out there" but at some point, it gets impossible to find- esp. when you are busy parenting and working. Who even knows where to find it? I have joked with friends who also miss pot that we could roll through the city in our mommy mobiles and try to score... it just gets to be ridiculous after a while.

I miss Carnation breakfast bars that they made in the late 80's/early 90's. Dr.McGlory- I hope you are not still mourning your Veat chicken as long as I have mourned my breakfast bars! I have never been able to find anything like them again. Also I really really really miss Split Personality hair serum- I loved that stuff.

Hotmama, it's only day 1 of our Veat withdrawal. We'll see how long we're at this. For the record, for breakfast foods I also miss Quaker Oats Toastables, which were healthier pop tarts.

Dr. McG, if you've not had the Morningstar Farms chik'n strips in the last few months, I'd recommend giving it another try. I didn't use to like 'em, but had 'em cooked for me a month ago, and they tasted different (read: good). I never had Veat, so I've no basis for comparison, but I think they've changed their recipe.

Thanks guys, but trust me... we've had them fairly recently and they are just down right weird compared to Veat. Maybe in a year or so when there's been no Veat for a long, long time we'll give in.

Yeah, I'd look awesome trolling through the hood in my Camry (or worse, the minivan) with empty baby seat in the back going "Dude, do you have a dime bag?" to an undercover cop. I'm too scared of being arrested to ever try and actually buy any, because I know the first time I ever tried it, it would be la policia.

OOOh, do you guys remember the mini shredded wheat square cereal with the strawberry stuff in the middle? I loved those. I don't even remember what they were called. Man, those were good.

And am I the only one who remembers Cabbage Patch Kids cereal when we were kids? That shit was nasty. My stepmother would make me eat it all the time. Barf.

how is it that the cop's wife is the one who can still get pot if she wanted it? ok, if she were allowed to do it. oh, that's right! i'm in college, art department no less.

ladies, come see me and i'll steer you in the right direction. shhhh don't tell the cop. hehehe.

Ellie, i'll mail you some. ;)

Actually, DB pointed out on FB that it's still around. (You just aren't travelling in the right circles, apparently) :D

DMcG, have you tried the Lightlife Smart Cutlets Chick'n Fillet? (I can't believe how stupid I felt writing "chick'n". I know that the convention is that if there's an apostrophe in the "chicken", there's no "chicken" in it, which is useful information to have, but for fuck's sake, can't they just write "fake chicken"? Or "meatless chicken". Or "chicken-resembling protein food". Whatever. Just stop with the cute apostrophes. If they had done their market research they'd know that vegetarians tend to take grammar rather seriously.)

Massachusetts apparently just made owning less than an ounce of pot a fine-only offense. Plus you have to hand over the pot. A win-win situation all around, it would seem.

hotmama -- sometimes I still look longingly at the breakfast area in the supermarket looking for those Carnation bars. They were a perfect mix of sugar and salt. Lots of salt. Mmmm. I miss those.

TR/Hotmama - I never had the CBars before but have you tried the Target or Nature's Valley brand of the sweet n' salty granola bars - those damn things are GOOD.

I miss a lot of different hair products and OPI nail polish colors. I get SO annoyed at first.

Food wise Tyson's used to make a broiler chicken in the fridge section that was already cooked just pop it in the oven. B-tards discontinued it b/c it was giving the supermarkets a run for their money on their deli chickens. Srsly my BFF called Tysons and was like WTF.

Clinique Rich Texture blush. I called their "Gone but not forgotten" 800 line and had 3x of the tawny shade shipped to me, 2 for me & 1 for my mom.

Clairol's Color Glaze hair product. I luuuuurve it. It's temporary color w/ extra shine. Gets me through when it's too soon to color, but my greys are on the warpath. I should have bought every last one when I saw it on clearance. Pollyanna me assumed they were just changing the packaging again.

I've inherited my mom's issues with discontinued beauty products. Peace in the Middle East? Electic cars for everyone? NO! Find me a case of the Loreal mascara they discontinued 10 years ago...STAT!

StypWool sounds awesome. Pot as well, at least from what I rememeber of the latter. I fear random and/or work injury-triggered drug testing. Now that I think about it, StypWool and pot would be a very practical combo, at least from what I rememeber of the days of feeling no pain but seeing lotsa blood.

Ellie they still have the butterfly binkies 2nd kid had them the brand is call umm Mam I think.

I never got into pot I've always just been a boozer.

It has been 22 years since I have partaken in the devil weed. 22 long, sober, lucid years - and I still miss it at times. Like Ellie said though, I'd be too afraid of getting busted. But I do love sniffing the air at concerts. That and the smell of freshly roasted chiles - they smell remarkably like, well, you know.

And Buncha - if you share this with anyone at church, I'm handing over potluck duty to you! ;)

I used to have a plastic horse on springs that I could ride...it played music too.

As far as pot, you really just need a younger person to hook you up. (But since you can't mail something like that without quite a bit of risk, I am not your man.)

the x-files. they don't even show reruns on fx anymore. i've had to move on to new sexual tension, but nobody does it as good as scully and mulder.

My foudation color in Mac was discontinued. I stocked up on Ebay when I got the warning, but now my supply is dwindling down...I'm gonna have to just deal with a new shade.

Kommish - Bones does the tension pretty well...they're friends but you're really rooting for them to get horizontal.

true, ellie, i forgot about that show (which i love, but not so much as x files) because it's on after my bedtime. because i'm apparently nine years old again and go to bed at 10.

Mystic Mint cookies

(like chocolate covered mint oreos...only better...much better. They were the road-trip food of choice for PF and I for YEARS)

"Gloom Away" body lotion from Origins.

Kiwi, Kellogg's just bought Mother's cookies. Your iced oatmeals are safe.

Leighbie! So good to see you on OS and as token of my appreciation I have a half used bottle of Gloom Away perfume (sensory scent?) by Origins. Would that satisfy your olfactory & tactile jones? Let me know and I'll send it your way.
