I must have been surfing too much at work as OS is now blocked on the work computer. The funny part? This is their reason:

The Websense category "Malicious Web Sites" is filtered.

Huh? I think we are quite the lovely bunch...

Ouch! That is just wrong - the fuckers!

I've been trying to self-filter OS since I started teaching in the middle school. I don't have a lot of time to fire it up, but it is almost irresistable in the 10 minutes at the end of recess before the thundering hordes return...and some of the stuff that pops up is TRULY inappropriate at a middle school!

try setting up an acct on your home computer at logmein.com and then you can log on through their website and browse on your home computer if you leave it on during the day. if your work lets you use logmein.

its free.

Oh yeah, it was a real bummer when OS was blocked from the Catholic hospital my son was at. There was worse stuff it let through. I started surfing on the 3G of my iPhone:)

I just looked at what constitutes a "malicious website" and it turns out that it has nothing to do with the website's content, it's about the code: "Malicious Web sites - Sites that contain code that may intentionally modify end-user systems without their consent and cause harm."

That's not to say that we're _not_ malicious or anything. We do have a rep to protect, ya know.

I'm totally malicious. I have a PhD in Evil.

And I am ABD in Evil.

Hey, mutter - I was just going to say that!!

Maybe we could get drmcg to be our advisor...

CPF - new favorite quote. My personal challenge will be to see how many times I can use it effectively at work.

Bummer, MM. Perhaps car54 is onto something evalllly wonderful. Welcome car54!

my j.d. concentration was evil.

Rommie had the same thing happen, and now she's completely gone.

AlternaDon, is there a way to fix this so we don't lose our beloved fellow parents?

If you use firefox, I think there are free plug-ins for it that basically allow you to get around these issues. I don't know how they work, but at my old job, where they blocked "bad" sites, a coworker jokingly put a picture of a woman giving head to a horse as my desktop wallpaper on my computer. I asked him how he did it, and he told me about the whole firefox plug-in thing.

I chant and burn incense to evil (no, I don't, but I'm going along with the theme here.)

thank you....i AM the internet police where i work, so i can tell you some possible work-arounds.

another way---altho if they have blocked you this may not work---is buy a little jump drive---about $15 bucks at Staples or wherever---download and install any browser you
prefer---Firefox, Opera...but install it on the jump drive, not your hard drive of your home computer.

keep the jump drive on your keyring or in your purse.

at work--insert the jump drive into a usb port, open Windows Explorer to go to that drive, and open your browser---all your internet activity will be on the jump drive, and at night, take it home with you---so you don't leave any history on the work computer. this has been very successful for a couple of people i know who work in places with very strict internet policies.

wow, that's really great advice! I guess it pays to have friends "in the know". Thanks Car54, and welcome!

But won't the packet sniffers still catch the content as it comes into your local network? I'm not sure how having a jump drive browser would help.
