More fuckity fuck fuck. (Job edition)

Those of you who count themselves amongst my friends might remember that I was excited to get a call asking me to sub for my old band program.  Two teachers are due, one any day now, and one in mid-Feb, meaning if all goes well I'd be subbing back to back for about three months.

Now I say with great exuberance:  Fuck em' all.

The original call came about 2 months ago, we talked over the basics of each teacher's responsibilities, including where in the DC metro area their schools were located, how many days a week they teach, and what type of music they like their kids to play.  At that point I was told they'd discuss amongst the two bosses and the two supervisors of the program, figure out how much to pay me, how much they'd pay me for mileage (both teachers work in the extremes of the area compared to where I live and I'd be on the road more than an hour each way), and I'd get more info as the first due date approached.

I patiently waited.  And waited.  Made a phone call to the one boss who had the answer.  Patiently waited some more.  And waited.  Called same boss again.  And waited.  Emailed other boss, was told to contact Boss 1.  Called again.  And waited.  Emailed Boss 2 desperately asking for information last Friday, since school starts on the 5th and I'd like to meet with the teacher I'm subbing for.  He told me to wait until he told me to meet ith her, and to "relax".  Silently bitched out Boss 2 through computer monitor.  And waited.

Finally today I got Boss 1 on the phone and asked if he could tell me the details I've been waiting to hear about.  After realizing I was asking about pay, he stammered a bit and said "it all depends on when they each deliver".  If the second teacher holds out to her due date, there will be no overlapping, and the two supervisors can cover all the teaching duties for both teachers for those three months, with me needed only one day a week.  If the second teacher delivered early, I might be needed for a week or two (depending on how early she goes), but once the first teachers returns to her school I'd no longer be needed.

I'm fighting back tears of EXTREME frustration at this point, and I told Boss 1 that this was never brought up, the supervisors doing the covering.  I'd been told by both Boss 1 and 2 from the beginning that I would be subbing for them for however long they'd be out, and for the 4-5 days a week they normally teach.  Boss 1 thought Boss 2 told me about it.  I told Boss 1 that my day care arrangements (that I'd described in detail to Boss 2 when i couldn't get in touch with Boss 1) were that the woman who cared for Big O could watch Ebay for the three months at the most, but could only do so by hiring an assistant, who would only work full-time, so therefore Ebay cannot attend day care part time.  I can't pay for full-time daycare on a part time salary from teaching one day a week in a town 2 hours away.

In the end, I think I may have hung up on him mid-sentence.

So here I am with thousands of dollars looming in bills due in two days, and only half that amount of money coming in from Hubby's paycheck.  It wouldn't be such an emergency if the goddamn government entity that commissioned a $5000 piece from Hubby had actually paid him in October like the contract said.  We're STILL waiting on that money, and it doesn't look like January's the month, either.  How do you sue the federal government for breach of contract?  He doesn't want to do that because this piece is supposed to be played at a big concert this summer, with noted high officials in attendance.  Gotta play nice.

Hubby's watching the girls right now while I limply troll the internet for temp agencies, hoping someone has opening not already filled by other deperate-for-money people.  Nothing like making only half what I'm worth because the other half goes to the agency.  I did that for two years, successfully doing the jobs of two people in an extremely busy school district office, earning $11 an hour (up from $10).

Fuck.

[/tantrum]

(p.s.- I only agreed to this sub job to schmooz in hopes of a full time position in the fall.  Now I want nothing to do with the fucktarts and their disorganized, if high-paying, program)

I am so sorry! That totally sucks. There's really not much more to say...

HBD I'm sorry to hear about this.

I temped through Kelly Services (and some others) for a while after I got out of college. I found that they had the highest paying admin temp positions. You might try them.

Holy shit HBD. That is whacked. Those bosses are fuckheads who should just do themselves up the ass with a cactus. I'm so very sorry. I've been in this position (luckily minus children at the time) and it was so stressful - I can only imagine how you're feeling.

I also temped with Kelly for a while and made decent wages, but I was single at the time. I hope you find something FAST that will help!

That really, really sucks. Bosses 1 and 2 deserve to be smacked good and hard for leading you on like that.

Have you thought about doing regular substitute teaching? I'm not exactly sure where you are, but any halfway decent sized school district is probably always in need of subs. I know that for here, I can work pretty much every day if I want and it pays about $100/day (because this is the biggest district in the area--the smaller suburban districts and the catholic schools pay less and have less need). It's all the fun of teaching without any of the prep work, politics, or dealing with the parents.

I am so sorry. What jerks!

I'm so sorry, HBD. Nice way to pull the carpet from underneath you.

Oh honey, I'm soooo sorry. I'll keep my fingers, toes and eyes crossed for you. Well, I can't actually cross my eyes, so how about my legs?

god, so sorry HBD. That is a really shitty situation they created and it sucks that they weren't upfront about how they expected things to go. I'll cross fingers and toes for you too.

GAH! Sucks, especially after being told to "relax."

But I love "fucktart." Well played, HBD.
